Milan to appeal Balotelli ban

Milan have announced that they will appeal Mario Balotelli’s three-match ban following his dismissal against Napoli on Sunday.
The 23-year-old was booked in the 57th minute before being shown a second yellow card for dissent after the final whistle was blown on his side’s 2-1 defeat at San Siro.
Being dismissed for two bookable offences carries a mandatory one-match suspension, but the Italian league has opted to extend Balotelli’s punishment for “directing insulting and intimidating expressions to the referee at the time of the sending-off”, it confirmed in a statement.
Milan have also been ordered to close the Curva Sud for one game after reported racist abuse during the loss to Rafael Benitez’s men, but in a statement published on their website on Monday, they confirmed their intention to appeal both decisions.
“Milan announces that we will complain against the suspensions of Mario Balotelli and the Curva Sud,” the statement read.

Balotelli had a typically eventful game on Sunday as he missed a penalty for the first time in his career and hit the bar before scoring a sublime injury-time consolation and getting sent off.
