CURRENT ELECTRICITY TARIFF IS CONSUMER FRIENDLY, SAYS NERC

Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Dr Sam Amadi, has said the current tariff system being operated is in line with human rights obligations.
Amadi, who disclosed this recently during a media chat, maintained that the current Multi Year Tariff Order (MYTO) 2 being operated is necessitated by the power reform, adding that, “This tariff is in line with human rights obligations of this country.”
Amadi, while defending the MYTO 2 tariff system, explained that there were public consultations on MYTO 2 to feel the pulse of consumers and so far no petition had been brought to the Commission.

He said that the public might petition for increase in generation, transmission and distribution but when it comes to tariff, anybody petitioning should support the commission in the area of reviewing the tariff from time to time.
Amadi however blamed the immediate impact of the tariff on the poor capacity of total grid generation overtime, adding that, “We have not done so much in the past to have more capacity. But today, NIPP is likely going to give us a total of 4000mw soon.”
He called on government to fast-track the revamping of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) so as to have capabilities to function effectively in the anticipated private-led power sector.
